Overview

By regulation, all commercially used weighing and measuring devices must be approved prior to use in New York State.   The National Council on Weights and Measures (NCWM) administers the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) which evaluates devices for their adherence to the requirements set forth in NIST Handbook 44.  NTEP will then issue a unique Certificate of Conformance number for each approved device, indicating it is a “type-approved, legal for trade device”.

New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets adopts NIST Handbook 44 and recognizes devices bearing an NTEP Certificate of Conformance number as being approved for use in the State of New York.
