Vital Brooklyn
Vital Brooklyn is an ongoing community development program for underserved neighborhoods in Central Brooklyn.
Central Brooklyn is one of the most vulnerable areas in all of New York State, with measurably higher rates of obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure; limited access to healthy foods or opportunities for physical activity; high rates of violence and crime; wide economic disparities due to unemployment and high poverty levels; and inadequate access to high quality health care and mental health services.
Vital Brooklyn offers an holistic approach that focuses on eight integrated areas of improvement: open space and recreation; healthy food; education; economic empowerment; community-based violence prevention; community-based health care; affordable housing; and resiliency.
Vital Brooklyn Funding Breakdown
The $1.4 Billion Plan Invests in Eight Integrated Areas of Improvement
$700M for Community-Based Health Care
The investment will establish new health care facilities and increase access to primary care providers and specialists.
$563M for Affordable Housing
The investment will create new affordable housing options, including rental and homeownership, that are green and healthy.
$140M for Open-Space and Other Programming
The investment will focus on maximizing green space, revitalizing recreation facilities, education & youth development programs & violence prevention.
Community Reinvestment Goals
225 new net jobs will created through the new ambulatory care network.
The Vital Brooklyn Initiative will exceed New York's 30% Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) requirement on all capital spending.
The Initiative has leveraged local institutions to create new and expanded workforce training opportunities.
The Initiative has grown and strengthened partnerships with community-based organizations to ensure long-lasting impact.
