New This Year: $1 Admission for All Women on August 28

The 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guaranteed women the right to vote, is the theme of Women's Day at the 2019 Great New York State Fair on Wednesday, August 28. Admission on Women's Day is $1 for all women.

The day begins with an 11 a.m. program in the Empire Theater of the Wegmans Art & Home Center. The program, called "Celebrating Their 100th Anniversary," will feature Jacqueline Shellman, State President-Elect of NYS Women, Inc., Candace Edwards of Zonta International, and speakers from the New York State League of Women Voters and the Junior League. Registration and refreshments begin at 10:30 a.m. in the theater. The event is free and open to the public.

The annual Women's Day luncheon will feature a historical reenactment from Cayuga Community College lecturer Dr. Melinda Grube as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the suffragist who organized the first convention on women's rights in Seneca Falls in 1848. A ticket is required for the luncheon and can be purchased here until August 15. The luncheon ticket includes admission to the Fair that day.

Also on Women's Day, a social justice exhibit will be on display in the Art & Home Center and women's advocacy groups will hold an information fair at the Chevy Court Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Organizers ask women to consider wearing white clothing in support of the suffrage movement.

Founded in 1841, the Great New York State Fair is America's third largest state fair. The Fair showcases the best of New York agriculture, provides top-quality entertainment and is a key piece of Governor Cuomo's CNY Rising strategy of growing the Central New York economy through tourism. Fair attendance is up more than 40% since the beginning of more than $120 million in investments, with 1.27 million people attending the Fair in 2018. The 2019 Fair runs from August 21 to September 2. Information about the Fair can be found here.

The New York State Fairgrounds is a 375-acre exhibit and entertainment complex that operates all year. A year-round schedule of events is available here.
