Jin Hua Issues Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Heng Cheong Loong Co. Dried Licorice in 10 Ounce Plastic Package, No Container Code

Jin Hua Inc, of Brooklyn, NY is recalling HENG CHEONG LOONG CO. DRIED LICORICE IN 10-OUNCE PLASTIC PACKAGE, NO CONTAINER CODE, because it contains undeclared sulfites. People who have a severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume these products.

HENG CHEONG LOONG CO. DRIED LICORICE IN 10-OUNCE PLASTIC PACKAGE, NO CONTAINER CODE, was distributed in NY, NJ, CT, and Pennsylvania through retail food stores and restaurants.

The product was sold in a clear plastic package with red and yellow lettering. The product appears as a yellowish-white sliced root inside the package.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by the Department’s Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in the product, which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of HENG CHEONG LOONG CO. DRIED LICORICE IN 10-OUNCE PLASTIC PACKAGE, NO CONTAINER CODE revealed in contained 11.9 milligrams of sulfites per serving.
