New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball today alerted consumers to the presence of undeclared sulfites in “Three Rivers” brand golden raisins, repackaged by Shata Trades Inc.,located at 10227 Ave D, Brooklyn, NY 11236. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites may run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume this product. To date, no illnesses have been reported to this Department in connection with this product.
The recalled “Three Rivers” brand golden raisins are packaged in a clear 400-gram plastic bag and with a UPC code 793283750198. The product may have been distributed throughout New York State.
Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by New York State Food Laboratory personnel revealed the product contained high levels of sulfites which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions, including anaphylactic shock, in some asthmatics and sensitive individuals. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the “Three Rivers” brand golden raisins revealed they contained 128.76 milligrams per serving.
Consumers who may have purchased these 400-gram packages of “Three Rivers” brand golden raisins should not consume them and are advised to discard the product immediately.
