New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball today alerted consumers that Gazab brand “Green Raisins (Chinese)” were found to contain sulfites which are not declared on the product label. To date, no illness have been reported to the Department of Agriculture and Markets in connection with this product. If consumed, this product poses a risk to those who have severe sensitivity to sulfites.
The Gazab brand “Green Raisins (Chinese)” are packaged in a 7 oz. (200 g) clear plastic bag with a white label. The product does not have a product code on the package. It has a UPC code of 8-41970-01582-9. It is labeled as distributed by United Trading Inc., 2487 S. Wolf Rd., Des Plaines, IL 60018.
Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Safety Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by the New York State Food Laboratory revealed the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites.
