New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball today alerted consumers that “Three Rivers Cranberry Mix,” distributed by Shata Traders Inc., located in Brooklyn, NY, is being removed from sale due to undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites may run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume this product. To date, no illnesses have been reported to the Department associated with this product.
“Three Rivers Cranberry Mix” sold in 7.05 oz plastic bags with the UPC Code: 793283751331 are subject to this alert. A photo of the product is below. The product was sold at retailers in the New York City metro area.
Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by New York State Food Laboratory personnel found the product contained high levels of sulfites that were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions, including anaphylactic shock, in some asthmatics and sensitive individuals.
