Acting State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball today announced the following events running from Friday, February 7 to Sunday, February 9 at the New York State Fairgrounds:
Beer lovers will enjoy old favorites and find new taste sensations at CNY Brewfest, taking place Saturday, February 8 in the Exhibit Center. Event organizer Bill Newman said there will be more than 50 beer stations open during the event, with each station usually pouring at least two types of draft beer. All samples are free with admission, which is $35 by advance sale or $40 at the door. Samples will be poured into a glass provided for free with the paid admission.
“People can taste something they might not buy in the store,” said Newman, who said the event also helps stores and restaurants to sample beers they may want to add to their product mixes. Well-known local brewers such as Middle Ages Brewing Company and Empire Brewing Company will be on hand, along with newcomers such as Hopshire Farm and Brewery of Dryden, Tompkins County. Brewers from the Finger Lakes Beer Trail will also be participating. Food will be available for purchase and Rob and the Js will provide music for the event.
The event takes place in two sessions, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Proof of age is required.
A huge motorcycle sale and swap meet also takes place on the Fairgrounds this weekend in the Center of Progress Building. Syracuse Super Swap 2014 is, according to its organizers, the Northeast’s largest showcase and swap meet under one roof. Cycle fans can buy new or used motorcycles, pick up hard-to-find parts, and talk about their favorite vehicles.
The event takes place Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from Noon – 5:00 p.m. Admission Saturday is $15 and Sunday is $12. Children under age 16 are admitted free. Organizers say food and drink will be available, and a band will provide music. More information is available at http://www.syracusesuperswap.com/defaultSYR.htm.
Organizers call the Country Folk Art Show ‘the ultimate craft show.’ Scores of vendors will make available for sale useful, creative, and affordable items with which people can do everything from add an accent to a room to redecorate the room from top to bottom.
The show takes place in the Horticulture Building Friday from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Admission is $6, but attendees can get $1 off with a coupon available on the show’s website, http://www.countryfolkart.com/. Admission is good all three days with a hand stamp.
The Empire Theater will host the first of three weekends of the Syracuse Shakespeare Festival’s production of “King Lear.” Gerard Moses stars as the ill-fated king, who falls insane after giving his property to two of his three daughters, with tragic consequences for everyone. Dan Stevens directs this production of the Bard of Avon’s famous 17th century play.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for students and for seniors age 62 and older, and $7 for Syracuse University students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and for groups of 12 people or more.
